Runway ML Pricing: What Runway Costs Per Month, Per Credit and Per Clip in 2026
Every Runway plan converted into what it actually renders: seconds of Gen-4.5 per month, effective cost per second, and which tier survives a real retry rate.
Last updated September 2026
Runway ML pricing starts at $12 per month on the Standard plan when billed annually, or $15 billed monthly, and that buys 625 credits. Because Gen-4.5 charges 60 credits for every 5 seconds of video, those 625 credits work out to roughly 52 seconds of finished footage a month. That is the number worth knowing before you pick a tier, and it is the number Runway's pricing page does not put in front of you.
Below is every current plan, what it actually renders, and the effective cost per second once you divide the price by the video you can make with it. Figures come from Runway's own pricing page in September 2026.
Runway ML pricing: every plan and what it renders
| Plan | Annual, per month | Monthly billing | Credits per month | Seconds of Gen-4.5 | Effective cost per second |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 125 one-time | About 10 seconds, once | Watermarked |
| Standard | $12 | $15 | 625 | About 52 seconds | $0.23 |
| Pro | $28 | $35 | 2,250 | About 187 seconds | $0.15 |
| Max | $76 | $95 | 9,500 | About 791 seconds | $0.10 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Negotiated |
All paid tiers are priced per user, so a three person team on Pro is $84 a month billed annually, not $28. That catches people out more often than the credit math does.
How much is Runway per month?
Runway is $12 to $76 per user per month on annual billing, and $15 to $95 on monthly billing. Monthly billing costs about 25 percent more than annual across every tier. The Free plan is a one-time 125 credit allowance with watermarks rather than a monthly refill, so it is a trial, not a tier you can work on.
What is a Runway credit worth?
A credit is the unit Runway meters generation in, and the exchange rate depends on which model you run. Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits per 5 second generation, which is 12 credits per second. That single number lets you convert any plan into minutes.
The trap is that credits are consumed by the attempt, not by the keeper. Generative video is not deterministic, so you prompt, you look at the take, and the take is often nearly right in a way that is useless: the camera pans when you wanted it locked off, the logo on the box turns to soup, the model blinks out of frame. You adjust and go again. Every attempt spends the full 60 credits.
Assume two to four attempts per shot you actually keep, which is normal, and Standard's 52 seconds a month becomes 13 to 26 seconds of usable footage. For a social calendar that needs two clips a week, Standard does not get you to the end of the month.
Which Runway plan should you buy?
Buy Standard only to evaluate. It is enough to learn the prompt syntax and see whether the output quality clears your bar, and not enough to ship with. Anyone producing on a schedule lands on Pro at $28, where 2,250 credits absorb a realistic retry rate and still leave around 45 to 90 seconds of keeper footage a month.
Max at $76 is for volume: an agency running several client accounts, or a team where more than one person generates. Before buying Max for one person, check whether you are buying credits or buying the rest of the suite, because those are different purchases and only one of them scales with seats.
Is Runway worth the price?
It depends on whether you want a generator or an editor. Runway is a creative suite: timeline, motion brush, inpainting, camera controls, a deep and genuinely good toolset wrapped around the generation step. If you are cutting inside Runway, the price is fair and the credit cost is only part of what you are paying for.
If you are dropping generated shots into Premiere or CapCut and doing the edit somewhere else, you are paying for a lot of surface area you will not open. At that point the honest comparison is cost per usable clip against tools built to do only the generation part. We put those numbers side by side on our Runway alternative page.
Runway pricing vs Sora 2 pricing
Sora 2 was billed per second through the OpenAI API at about $0.10 per second with no monthly minimum, which undercut Runway Standard's effective $0.23 and matched Max. That comparison is now historical: OpenAI has scheduled sora-2, sora-2-pro and the Videos API for shutdown on September 24, 2026, and has named no replacement model. We covered the full breakdown on our Sora 2 pricing page, including what a finished clip cost once retries were counted.
The practical effect on this decision is that a chunk of people who were happily paying per second are now shopping for a monthly plan, and Runway is one of the obvious places they land. If that is you, price it against tools that charge per second of output rather than per 5 second block, because the block rounding quietly costs you money on short social cuts.
Does Runway have a free plan?
Yes, with caveats that matter. The Free plan gives 125 credits once, not monthly, which is roughly two Gen-4.5 generations, and the output carries a watermark. It is enough to check whether the model can render your kind of shot. It is not enough to evaluate consistency, which is the thing that actually decides whether a generative tool works for your brand.
Getting more out of the credits you buy
The cheapest second of video is the one you do not have to regenerate, so most of the saving available on any of these platforms comes from prompt discipline rather than plan choice. Write the shot the way a director would: subject, then camera, then lighting, then motion. Lock one variable at a time between attempts. Vague prompts are what turn a $28 plan into a $95 one.
The second lever is reuse. A 5 second clip that cost you three attempts should not run once and die. Cut it to 9:16 for Reels and Shorts, 1:1 for the feed, 16:9 for the site hero, and hold the good frames as stills for the ad set. Teams that turn one asset into every channel format systematically get two or three times the mileage out of the same credit spend, which beats any plan upgrade.
The short version
Runway costs $12 to $76 per user per month on annual billing. Standard renders about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month, Pro about 187 seconds, Max about 791 seconds, and the effective cost per second falls from $0.23 to $0.10 as you climb. Budget two to four attempts per keeper shot, buy Pro if you are shipping on a schedule, and check that you want the editing suite before you pay for it.
If what you need is the generation step on a flat monthly number, you can compare plans and credit allowances here, or render a clip from a text prompt on the homepage first and price it afterward.
