Sora Alternatives and Replacements After the Sora 2 Shutdown

The short answer
You need a Sora alternative because Sora 2 was switched off, not because it underperformed. OpenAI announced on March 24, 2026 that sora-2, sora-2-pro and the Videos API would be removed, closed the consumer Sora app on April 26, 2026, and shut the API down on September 24, 2026. Requests now return 410 Gone and the replacement column in the deprecation table stayed empty. For short generated clips on a predictable budget, a flat-plan generator is the closest swap. For a full editing suite around the generation step, Runway is the strongest option. For a presenter reading a script, you want an avatar platform, which is a different category entirely.

When OpenAI retires a text model it normally names the one you should move to, and migration is a string change in your config. This deprecation left that column blank, which means there is no in-house successor to move to. The decision in front of you is a vendor decision, not a version bump.
The notice also removed data associated with the service at shutdown, so renders that lived only on OpenAI's side are gone. What survives is whatever you saved: downloaded files and, more useful, the prompts. A prompt that reliably produced the shot you wanted is the most portable asset you have, and it is the fastest way to recreate a look on a different model.

One row is worth dwelling on. Gather what you saved
Collect every render you downloaded and every prompt log, Slack thread or doc where a working prompt lives. Server-side Sora data was deleted on September 24, 2026, so your own copies are the only source left.

Pull out the prompt text for every shot that worked, along with the seed and settings if you logged them. Prompts transfer between models better than people expect, and they are what lets you rebuild a house style somewhere else in a day instead of a month.

Check commercial rights before you commit, not after
Output quality is the thing everyone evaluates and the licence is the thing that actually stops a campaign. Three clauses matter for business work. Whether free-tier output is licensed for commercial use at all, and on most platforms it is not. Whether your rights survive cancelling the plan, because some grants are tied to an active subscription. And whether the provider takes a licence back over what you generate, which is fine for a social post and a problem for a client deliverable.
Watermarks are the visible version of this. A watermark on a free tier is not a branding annoyance, it is the platform telling you the output is not licensed for the use you had in mind. If the video is going on a company channel or into a paid media buy, price a paid plan from the start and read the terms once, properly.
