Synthesia is the cheaper avatar platform per finished minute, and Colossyan is the cheaper way to get SCORM and more than one editor. Synthesia Starter costs $18 a month billed yearly ($216 a year) and works out near $0.80 a minute once its 10 included monthly minutes are counted. Colossyan Professional costs $59 a month billed yearly ($708 a year) for 30 standard and 10 premium avatar minutes a month, about $1.48 a minute, but it exports SCORM and takes up to three editors. Synthesia keeps both of those for Enterprise.

Synthesia figures come from synthesia.io/pricing and Colossyan figures from colossyan.com/pricing and its pricing FAQ, both read in October 2026. All prices are in US dollars. Cost per minute is our arithmetic, because neither company publishes it.

Synthesia vs Colossyan pricing plan by plan

Both vendors restructured in 2026. Synthesia renamed its middle plan from Creator to Pro, moved to credits at 100 a minute and added 10 video minutes a month to every plan. Colossyan made its entry plan free and splits minutes between two avatar generations: NEO, the standard avatars, and NEO2, the newer, more expressive ones that it rations more tightly.

The line that decides most training purchases sits in the editor column. Every self serve Synthesia plan has one editor. If two instructional designers need to build videos, Synthesia sends you to Enterprise. Colossyan Professional lets up to three people edit before the sales call.

Is Synthesia better than Colossyan?

Synthesia is better for a single producer who wants the lowest cost per minute, the widest avatar library and more than 140 languages. Colossyan is better for a small L&D team that needs SCORM files for an LMS, in-video quizzes and branching, and two or three editors without an Enterprise contract. The avatar quality gap is a matter of taste, so test both on your own script.

How much does Synthesia cost per minute compared with Colossyan?

About $0.80 to $1.29 per finished minute on Synthesia's self serve plans and about $1.48 to $1.97 on Colossyan Professional, depending on which avatar minutes you actually use. Synthesia's included 10 minutes a month carry most of its advantage at the low end.

If your team only likes the NEO2 avatars, Colossyan gets expensive quickly, and the add on pack of 600 NEO2 minutes for $1,500 a year works out to $2.50 a minute on top of the plan. What a training team of one to three editors pays per year

This is where Colossyan wins on list price, because Synthesia has no self serve plan with a second editor.

EditorsSynthesiaColossyan Professional, yearly
1$216 (Starter) or $768 (Pro)$708
2Enterprise quote, or two separate accounts$1,068
3Enterprise quote, or three separate accounts$1,428

Synthesia guests can review and comment, which covers a subject matter expert who signs off on scripts. They cannot build videos. Separate accounts work on paper but split your avatars, brand assets and video library across logins, which most L&D leads will not accept for long.

Does Synthesia have SCORM export?

Yes, but only on Enterprise. Synthesia lists SCORM export among Enterprise features, next to SSO and unlimited minutes, so the price is a sales quote. Colossyan Professional includes 5 SCORM exports a month at $59 a month billed yearly, covering both single videos and courses, and Enterprise removes that limit. For a team that must publish into an LMS this quarter, Colossyan is the faster route.

Which one has quizzes and branching?

Colossyan, on every plan. Its free Starter includes 10 interactive videos a month and Professional 15. Synthesia lists interactive videos from Pro at $64 a month billed yearly. If you stay on Synthesia Starter, you can still turn the finished video into a multiple choice quiz and host it next to the lesson.

Billing rules that change the real bill

Colossyan gives yearly buyers the whole year up front

Annual Colossyan subscribers receive the full year of minutes at purchase. A team that builds a large onboarding library in its first quarter can spend most of its 480 minutes early, which suits a launch project. Unused monthly minutes do not roll over, and deleting a video does not refund them.

Synthesia charges edits only for what changes

Synthesia uses credits when it generates video, not while you edit or preview, and regenerating a three second change bills three seconds. Colossyan counts the length of each generated video, so a full re-render of a ten minute module costs ten minutes again. For training that gets revised every quarter, that difference adds up.

Video length limits differ

Colossyan Professional allows videos up to 30 minutes on monthly billing and 50 minutes on yearly. Long compliance modules are usually split into chapters anyway, so this rarely decides the purchase, but check it before you script a single 45 minute video.

Free plans are not equal

Colossyan's free Starter gives 20 standard avatar minutes a month and a 14 day trial of paid features without a card. Synthesia Basic gives 10 minutes and puts its logo on videos. For a real pilot with your own script, Colossyan's free tier goes further.

Which should you buy?

  • A solo course creator or trainer shipping a lot of minutes: Synthesia Starter or Pro billed yearly. The lowest cost per minute of the two and the largest avatar and language range.
  • A two or three person L&D team publishing to an LMS: Colossyan Professional. SCORM, quizzes and up to three editors for $708 to $1,428 a year.
  • A company with SSO and audit requirements: get Enterprise quotes from both. Neither publishes Enterprise prices.

Where VideoMake fits

Neither Synthesia nor Colossyan films the world around the presenter. A safety module needs a real looking loading dock, a product course needs the product on a bench, a recruiting video needs a shot of the office floor. VideoMake renders those as 4, 8 or 12 second clips from a prompt or a photo, in 16:9 or 9:16, and Studio on every plan upscales, captions and joins them. It costs about $1 a second of 720p on Plus at $49 a month, so per minute it is far more expensive than any avatar platform. Use Synthesia or Colossyan for the presenter, and the tool at the top of this page for the few seconds of footage they cannot make.

Synthesia vs Colossyan FAQ

Is Colossyan cheaper than Synthesia?

Not per minute. Synthesia Starter billed yearly costs about $0.80 a finished minute against about $1.48 on Colossyan Professional with both avatar pools used. Colossyan is cheaper for a team, because three editors cost $1,428 a year on Professional while Synthesia needs an Enterprise quote for a second editor.

Is Colossyan free?

Yes, Colossyan has a permanent free Starter plan with 20 NEO avatar minutes a month, half a minute of NEO2, one editor and 10 interactive videos, but no SCORM export. Professional costs $59 a month billed yearly and adds 30 NEO and 10 NEO2 minutes a month, SCORM and up to three editors.

Does Colossyan have SCORM?

Yes. Colossyan Professional includes 5 SCORM exports a month, for single videos and courses, and Enterprise makes them unlimited in streaming and self contained formats. The free Starter plan has no SCORM export.

Can Synthesia and Colossyan videos be used commercially?

Yes on paid plans, which is how both are sold to businesses. Synthesia's free Basic plan puts its logo on videos, so client or public work starts on Starter. Check each vendor's terms for custom avatars of real people, which need the person's consent on both platforms.
